On 31st May, 1916, the 13th King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 111 Brigade, 37th Division, moved into the front line near Bailleuval, a few miles to the south-west of Arras. At midnight on 3rd June the 10th Royal Fusiliers launched a raid on the enemy lines from the trenches held by 13th King’s Royal Rifle Corps which inevitably led to retaliation by the German artillery. It was this shell fire that probably accounted for the death of Frank Swainston. |
